Subject Intent
At North Town Primary School and Nursery, our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum aims to provide children with an understanding of other languages and cultures, specifically, but not limited to, Spanish and the Spanish-speaking world. To do this, we intend to develop and nurture learners through providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge when learning a language. At North Town we develop an individual’s ‘cultural capital’ through developing their knowledge about a wide range of cultures, so they are confident in discussing its value and merits and have been given a vast array of experiences and access to skill development.
Enhancing children’s experiences of learning languages will help to create enthusiasm towards learning in general, lend valuable links between languages and other curriculum subjects, as well as foster a passion to know and understand more about the wider world, especially as the UK has become an increasingly multicultural society. Spanish curriculum at North Town.
In line with the National Curriculum for Languages, and through high-quality teaching and learning, we seek to create Spanish learners who have regular opportunities to:
- Stimulate their creativity and imagination – Build their understanding of new vocabulary
- Explore patterns and sounds of language by joining in and responding
- Appreciate language patterns in stories, songs, poems, and rhymes
- Support their conversational speaking, allowing them to engage in conversations, ask questions as well as respond to questions, expressing their own opinion
- Help develop their pronunciation and intonation when speaking, building their confidence to speak in full sentences using their known vocabulary and present information orally to a range of audiences.
- Develop an understanding of grammar, particularly verbs and nouns, and how these differ from English
- Encourage written work, allowing them to express their opinions and describe things through writing ideas down
- Broaden their vocabulary by introducing new words through the use of familiar written material, including a dictionary
- Celebrate multiculturality and inculcate a passion to know more about the multicultural society they live in, as well as the wider world.
