Subject Intent

Here at North Town we believe  that music should be a big part of our school life. Our music curriculum intends to inspire creativity, self-expression and give children opportunities to connect with others. We make sure that music is dripped in throughout the day, listening and enjoying music no matter the lesson.

Our children are encouraged to perform their skills as often as they can in choirs, ukulele orchestras and performances in assemblies and lunchtimes. Music can allow us to feel different things, to go to different places and to learn new routines. Children at North Town have music in the classrooms for a purpose, it sets the tone to the day, the lesson or the minute. We use peppier music to invigorate students at the start of the day, and more tranquil tunes to calm them when focused attention is needed.

Our school curriculum is full, rich and balanced. With music taking centre stage in many of our projects. We encourage children to listen, make, experience, explore and perform different styles, tempos and types of music.

We hope that children will leave North Town with a lifelong love of listening to and performing music as music is central to our lives and essential in school. ‘Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity’ (The National Curriculum)
